Bottom Line

The PS4 Slim does all the work the original PS4 can do but it is not necessary unless you don't have enough space under your TV.

Another PlayStation release?..

Its been only a week since Sony revealed their next PlayStation 4 console named the ‘Pro’. But now they are introducing another one to the market and this time it is a replacement of the original PS4. The new PS4 or the PS4 slim is actually.. slim. There is no great changes to this console, yet anyone who intends to buy the original console will find some difficulty after the Slim’s release.

Design

As the name suggests, the new PS4 is smaller than the original which would allow users to fit it horizontally or vertically (stand sold seperately) in small areas. The new PlayStation 4 lacks the elegancy of the original PS4 in looks and like the Pro it lacks the half-gloss finish and completely adopts the matte finish. This lessens the beauty of the console but protects it from scratches.

The hard drive replacement is made easy on this console allowing us to access the HDD by removing a screw than many. The face of the console consists of the disc tray, USB 3.0 ports and there is no space left for any other things to get added, yet Sony managed to include its logo.

The new PS4 adopts the slanting design from the original one. But the console looks old in design. I will not say ugly .. but not quite beautiful. The Xbox One was criticized for its bulky size and box like appearance but it too looked classy in its own right and Microsoft’s next console only corrected it.

What’s at the back

The Slim consists of a similar set of ports as in the original PS4. It has a power port, HDMI Out port, ethernet port and an accessory port and for anyone searching for changes in the new console can find the exclusion of the optical audio port. Yes, you heard that right. If you are planning to connect your high-end audio system while playing then take a turn back as the new PS4 Slim doesn’t support it in any way.

The Slim supports 5GHz Wifi (802.11ac) than the 2.5GHz on the original console.

New controller

The PS4 Slim features a similar DualShock 4 controller but has some changes. Lets take a look at the changes in design first. The thumbsticks, d-pad, bumpers and triggers now feature a grey color. The two holders also feature a grey color at the tip which gives more grip.

There is an addition of a thin strip of player indicating light at the front of the controller. This is a great addition as we don’t need to flip the controller to know which player we are. Also, connecting to the console using USB cable allows you to play the controller wired, which will reduce latency.

The competition

Sony released this new console to outperform Microsoft’s Xbox One S for sure. Because even the original PS4 is still a slim model, even slimmer than Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and One. But looking at the competitor, Xbox One S looks cute and beautiful. Its 40℅ smaller than the Xbox One and is really an upgrade from the original while the PS4 slim is not, in both cases. It is not as beautiful as the orginal sleek PS4 and isn’t really an upgrade.

On one side, the PS4 excluded the optical audio port leading to greater problems for those who intend to use an audio system for the console, while the Xbox One S includes a 4K BluRay player and HDR gaming. Note that all PS4 consoles will support HDR after PS4 Pro’s release.

Looking at the storage, maximum the PS4 could give the users is a 1TB console but Microsoft did offered 2TB consoles. It isn’t really a problem as both consoles offer external HDD support for more storage.

The higher variants of the two consoles, PS4 Pro and Project Scorpio seeks native 4K gaming resolution and VR. We have inspected the two consoles and sorted out the differences earlier.

Verict

The PS4 Slim is suited to those who has less space under their TV or for PlayStation fanboys who collects every console released by Sony. But it is not necessary if you already have the original PS4 and have enough space to put it on.

The PS4 Slim is not at all a powerless console as it contains the same hardware as the original one and also let you play most games in native 1080p resolution. But if it comes to the Slim vs the original, I would pick the original one as it is beautiful and sleek in design and also contains an optical audio port. However the original console will be replaced quickly after the Slim’s release which we know from the history of last-gen consoles.
