World of Tanks – Strv m/42-57 Alt A.2 Tank Review

Introduction words

The hype surrounding Swedish tech tree releasing is at its full peek as we get the first ever tank made in Sweden. Like always it’s premium variant of tier 6 medium counterpart. The philosophy on behalf of WG for releasing premium tanks first is the crew training bonus for the nation tanks that come after. However, this time around the crew for Strv m/42-57 Alt A.2 (or m/42-57 as that’s what I’ll refer to it when I need to use its ridiculously long name) counts only 3 members. So don’t expect much of a crew trainer in this one. As you’ll probably miss out on 1-2 crew members in your new Swedish tanks when they’re released.
On the other hand the premium tag also means that you’ll get a nice boost to credits earned when playing this vehicle. But yet again it won’t earn you pile of credits like tier 8 premiums would.
Borderline: Don’t expect much from 2 main bonuses of ‘payed with hard currency’ Strv m/42-57.

Main tank characteristics

Firepower

DPM 1,686.78
Damage 150
Penetration (mm) 148
Reload Time (sec) 15.34
Rate of Fire (rnds/min) 11.25
Clip Size 4
Clip Reload 2
Aim Time (sec) 2.21
Dispersion (m) 0.34
Caliber (mm) 75
Shell Velocity (m/sec) 925
Ammo Capacity 60
The first thing that pops into your eyes is probably the atrocious damage per minute that this tank has. When compared to other premium tier 6 tanks we can see that it’s around 300-550 lower (Cromwell B – 2,165). However, there’s a good reason for this. The Strv has an autoloader with 150 alpha damage meaning that the full clip can do around 600 damage. This is absolutely huge pro for this tank, and its main feature. Just note that some of tier 7 don’t get this clip potential.

Armour

Hull armour:
-Front: 50mm
-Side: 30mm
-Rear: 29mm
Turret armour:
-Front: 40mm
-Side: 20mm
-Rear: 20mm
In other words don’t expect to bounce much. This tank isn’t supposed to take beatings. Even when hull down and using your gun depression only your lucky star can grant you a ricochet. Everything with 100mm+ penetration should overmatch your turret.

Mobility and other stats

Top Speed (km/h) 45
Reverse Speed (km/h) 20
Engine Power (hp) 340
Power/Weight (hp/t) 13.41
Tank Traverse (°/sec) 38
Terrain Resistance
-Hard 0.77
-Medium 0.86
-Soft 1.92

Gun Elevation (°) 12
Gun Depression (°) 6
Gun Traverse (°/sec) 35
Mobility wise the Strv m/42-57 really does let down. The engine power is mediocre. Terrain resistances suck and the overall feel of the tank when shifting isn’t much better. Especially when compared to Cromwell B or some other premium tier 6 mediums. For me this was the biggest letdown as I expected much more from a tank with no armour.

My overall thoughts

Let me start of by saying that this tank isn’t for everyone (most of regular players). Main feature of Strv is its gun and I won’t lie it feels great almost 1 clipping other medium tier 6 counterparts. But other than that this tank ain’t much of a tech tree hype builder. When you’re aware that Skoda T40 and Cromwell B exist, the only reason for spending around 15-16 euros for this tank are for the crew training. Which is greatly hindered as I already mentioned. Usage of Strv m/42-57 Alt A.2 in Stronghold or Team Battles is debatable and in the current Cromwell and Amx 12t meta it’s almost impossible. The only viable tactic would be to go all in with everyone on your team driving one of these.
I really wouldn’t recommend picking Strv m/42-57 Alt A.2 up as there are many different, better ways of spending your hard earned money.
