Overwatch: Genji Spotlight

Genji is one of the most difficult heroes to get into. Mastering him is probably the biggest challenge when it comes improving yourself at playing certain characters. Before we get into any ability details let’s take a look at some lesser known facts:

Name: Genji Shimada
Gender: Male
Nationality: Japanese
Age: 35

Overwatch Genji

Cyber-Agility (passive ability)
This allows Genji to perform mid-air double jumps as well as climb walls that he’s facing. It terms of use and fun factor this is probably the winner of all other movement abilities in the game. Cyber-Agility makes Genji almost impossible to track and makes life a living hell to all Bastions.

Shuriken (Default use key: Mouse 1)
Shuriken is one of two ways Genji can engage his targets with primary weapon. It allows him to rapidly throw 3 shurikens at his target. All 3 of those will fly vertically towards his aiming circle with very little if any spread.
Damage: 28 per shuriken
Rate of fire: 1 shot per second
Ammo: 24
Reload time: 1 second
Headshot: Can

Fan of Blades (Default use key: Mouse 2)
This is the secondary firing mode of Genji’s primary weapon. Instead of shooting 3 shurikens vertically it fires 3 shurikens horizontally with big gap between those projectiles.
Damage: 28 per shuriken
Rate of fire: 1.77 shots per second
Ammo: 24
Reload time: 1 second
Headshot: Can

Deflect (Default use key: E)
This is by far my most favorite ability in the game. It’s really simple in terms of understanding but it has the biggest skill cap of any abilities. It allows Genji to deflect any incoming non channeled projectile damage. And not just that, it gives Genji power to reflect all of that damage towards his foes. Careful planing when to use this ability and proper execution can make or brake good Genji players.
Duration: 2 seconds
Cooldown: 8 seconds

Swift Strike (Default use key: Shift)
Once again this is one of the toughest abilities to use most effectively. It allows Genji to dash in the direction he’s facing. It can also be used for gaining height as it makes possible for Genji to dash upwards. On top of all that it does flat amount of damage making it possible to eliminate your enemies with this ability. If a foe dies from damage inflicted by this ability the cooldown of Swift Strike will reset.
Damage: 50
Max dash range: 14 meters
Cooldown: 8 seconds
Headshot: Can’t

Dragonblade (Default use key: Q)
Dragonbalde is Genji’s ultimate ability. It makes him wield his katana for a short period of time. This weapon does much greater damage than his Shurikens and while in Dragonblade form Genji can still use all of his abilities except his throwing projectiles.
Damage: 120 per slash
Rate of fire: 1 slash per second
Max range: 5 meters
Duration: 8 seconds
Headshot: Can’t

Overwatch Genji

Ryūjin no ken o kurae!

In previous paragraphs I already mentioned Genji’s insane skill cap and damage potential that’s hard to reach right of the bat. I would’t recommend anyone with small game knowledge to try Genji out until he’s experienced enough with the game. However, once you feel capable and wiling to learn, probably the toughest character in the game you’ll have a blast of a time playing. Use your Shurikens when engaging targets at a greater distance. Fan of Blades is great when dealing with close range foes. Genji is great counter to: Bastion, Mercy, Widowmaker and Torbjorn. However, he can struggle when dealing with Mei, Zarya and Winston.

Fun facts

-Hanzo is Genji’s older brother
-Genji and Hanzo were originally the same character
-He’s a Samurai not a Ninja
