A US Congress Candidate says she’s heading to Bronze 5 in League of Legends

New York Congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has revealed that she’s an active fan of League of Legends. The Democratic candidate, who made headlines when she won her primary contest back in June, tweeted over the weekend to say she was heading back onto Summoner’s Rift.

Ocasio-Cortez is running in New York’s 14th Congressional District, which covers Queens and the Bronx. Her primary victory over incumbent Democrat Joe Crowley was billed by multiple outlets as a major election upset. But rather than focus solely on the politics, Ocasio-Cortez has also been tweeting about her personal life.

Over the weekend, she posted on Twitter to say that she was “dusting off my League account, which hasn’t been touched since the campaign started.” For the record, that campaign kicked off quite a long time ago – Ocasio-Cortez was announced as a candidate back in May 2017. That means that her games last week were the her first in nearly 18 months. As a result, Ocasio-Cortez wasn’t particularly confident that her performance would be up to much.

Her tweet also read “Bronze V, here we come.” That references League of Legends’ ranked system, in which Bronze V is, for now, the very bottom of the ladder. It’s set to be replaced in that role by a new ‘Iron’ Rank, arriving next year, but for now, it makes clear that Cortez might not be a top-tier League player.

In the replies to that initial tweet, a Riot developer asked about Ocasio-Cortez’s favourite characters. She replied that her mains are Morgana, Lux, and Miss Fortune, and that she’s “working on Anivia.” She reiterates, however, that “I’m pretty bad at it so let’s temper our expectations here.”

That kind of drop-off will probably happen if you don’t play a competitive, ever-changing game for nearly a year and a half, I guess. Since the last time Ocasio-Cortez played, five new champions have been introduced, plenty more have been reworked, and the game’s entire rune system has been overhauled.
