Victorious Orianna will be this year’s League of Legends ranked reward
Riot Games is teasing this year’s Victorious skin, which is awarded each year to players who finish the game’s ranked season in Gold rank or higher. Earlier this afternoon, the game’s European Twitter account posted a brief video teasing the skin for the 2018 season.
In an Ask Riot thread earlier this year, a designer named IAMWALRUS talked about the company’s process for deciding which champion would receive the Victorious skin for that year. They said that the team looks “at champions that had a big competitive impact so far that year – this is largely based on Ranked and Pro Play.” Those criteria are then narrowed down further, to ensure a good spread of skins across multiple champions
In the tweet, which you can see below, it becomes pretty clear which champion is getting the new skin this year. In the video, you can see a robed woman levitating a large, metallic sphere in front of her. That all but guarantees, then, that we’ll be getting Victorious Orianna as this year’s skin.
That’s a bit of a weird pick, for my money, as I wouldn’t say that the Lady of Clockwork has been all that impactful in this year’s meta. According to analytics site champion.gg, she’s currently sitting around halfway down the list of optimal midlaners. She’s been more popular than average, sure, but struggled to rise above a 50% win rate for the past few patches.

Riot tends to start teasing the Victorious skins around a month before they arrive, so expect to see Victorious Orianna arrive in patch 8.22. To stay more up to date, check out the League of Legends patch 8.21 notes – in terms of balance, they’re reasonably slim, but they have a whole bunch of Halloween and K-Pop themed skins.
